How to come up with a good name for my online store?

Having a great business name is important for your success as an online entrepreneur. The wrong name can cost you bucks and also be less effective in future aspects.

So, it’s very important to find the most appropriate name when setting up your online store to help it stand out from the rest. Here are a few things to consider while looking for a killer name for your online business.

  1.  The Name should be Short and Simple

A short & crisp name is great for several reasons: It’s easy to remember, pronounce and gives a lot of mouth marketing. Finding the right name for your business can be challenging, though, fortunately, it’s a huge space and there is always a void for fresh, creative and compelling names.

Here are some of the strategies you could consider:

  • Try different combinations of short words. Two short words that rhyme or that are alliterative (e.g. “Good Food”)
  • Come up with a new idea or develop something out of the existing ones by putting a slight change to them. Tech brands like Google, eBay and Yahoo have instantly recognizable names, even though they aren’t real words.

Conduct market research, analyze your competitors and their names and try to come up with something unique and different from them keeping in mind, you stay in your niche. By definition, if you want to be different you have to ‘tic’ when others ‘tac’.

  1. Make your Online Presence

Having a custom domain name for your store is crucial as it will represent your brand in the online space, although the domain name can be changed later on. However, there is always an added value if you start with the best possible name for your business and keep doing well with it.

You might also consider selling on different marketplaces such as  Snapdeal, eBay, Amazon or any other third-party marketplace along with your own online store to make a name out of your business and let the customers have your business name in their mind. Anyway, it’s better to pre-check your business name idea on different e-commerce sites to make sure the names are available to you, and so that your potential customers don’t confuse you with your fellow competitors.

  1. Get Creative with your domain name

While some experts believe that Google algo isn’t as friendly to lesser-known domains like .ly, you should still be able to rank just as high as a .com if you have a high-quality site with a good user experience. Plus, going with a snazzy domain is far more unique and brand-specific and makes your website stand out.

  • Shop[YourBrand].com
  • Get[YourProduct].com
  • [YourBrand][industry].com

Some not-so-popular TLDs to consider:

  • .store
  • .shop
  • Based on the product you sell (.shoes, .art)
  • Continuation of your brand name (e.g. for “Ayurveda Health Supplements”, or for “Rider Shoes Co.”)
  1. Be Original

First of all, you got to make sure that the business name you’ve come up with is legal to be reused. Once you’ve concluded that your name is available, go to Google/Bing and see if the names on your list show up. Could your page appear at the top of the search results? If you choose a generic name, you’ll have a hard time ranking it very well.

It’s also important to check Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites you’ll want to use for availability.

  1. Find new inspiration

If you’ve run out of business name ideas, you might want to have themes to think about. Maybe you look for a name that has some deeper meaning or some trend. Other languages can provide plenty of ideas, too.
